Week 9 Term 1 2021

Welcome to the last week of the first term of Year 1!

What a whirlwind term we have had.  Last Friday was a wonderful day where we celebrated our achievement in our InitiaLit structured literacy program and our work on writing dictation by writing four amazing sentences and then a paragraph about our teddies.  We loved having them come and visit and they even enjoyed having a crunch and sip session after reading and a play out in the nature playground! We begin each day with our explicit reading and spelling learning on the mat before breaking off to our differentiated reading and spelling groups.  I am so proud of how persistent and focused the children are everyday towards learning and how far they have come in their reading and writing we do each day in 1K.  Please feel free to come in and have a look in our writing book or integrated learning scrapbook anytime to see all the work we have done!  Last week was the introduction to our writing unit learning about narrative stories which we will continue into next term.

In Mathematics, we completed our learning unit about subtraction and we are finishing the term learning about the concept of measurement and in particular length.  We will be comparing the length and heights of different objects and learn about the importance of using the same repeated object when we want to give something a numerical size to help order and compare lengths.  Our recent learning about subtraction and the counting on strategy with help us answer some questions involving length too.

We also had a great time learning about our super workers who live right outside our classroom in the outdoor verandah area - our wonder worms!  Mr Lee came to visit along with a few Year 4 scientist helpers to teach us about these amazing animals and we learnt a lot of very interesting information as well as getting to see how they move and even what they felt like when they moved!

Thank you

A very big THANK YOU  to all those parents that have attended (and planned for this week) parent interviews. I have loved meeting with all of you and telling you about your child's learning so far this term. I truly appreciate all of the support you are providing your child at home.

Free Dress 💚

Congratulations to NATURALISTE who was this weeks token winners. They have won the privilege of wearing free dress this Wednesday 31st March, rather than Thursday as the middle and upper primary will be away at the swimming carnival.

Homework

Homework is due Wednesday 31st of March. If your child is going to be absent on this day, please send it in earlier as we can set up the first fortnight and the folders and books will remain at school over the holidays ready to go for the beginning of Term 2.

Merit Award Winner 🏆

Congratulations to Edie who was the Week 8 Merit Award Winner. We feel very lucky to have you in our class 😁 You always work hard and have such an optimistic outlook!

PrePrimary Need your Help!

Pre-primary science lessons have involved looking at how ‘the sun changes everything’.We are planning on finishing our unit by constructing 2 ‘icebergs’ in the pre-primary area to see how the sun effects one sitting in the sun and the other sitting in the shade. But we need your help….We are asking every family in the school to bring ice blocks (made using an ice cream container or large plastic container) to the Pre-primary playground this Thursday morning (1st April). You may colour the water if you like. We will watch the icebergs melt throughout the day after predicting how long it will take for the icebergs to melt and which one will melt first.  Please help us construct the biggest icebergs we can!!!

If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to email me,

Thank you for your support.

Kind regards,

Penny and Gemma
