Week 4 Term 2 2021

Happy Monday and welcome back to another busy week! I hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day and were spoiled with love, gratitude and maybe even some time spent with your feet up!  Much love was spent in class the last couple of weeks with the kids so excited to share the gift and cards made so carefully.  Some gorgeous portraits too of you I must say! x

Our Learning 😍😏🤗🥰

Last week and this week we have really put our mathematician brains to the test and learn all about telling time. This can be a tricky concept, but we are determined to get there, it is expected in Year One that students are able to read o'clock and half past times on an analogue clock and digital clock and be able to write these times as well.  🕤

We are finishing up our narratives writing unit, learning about a story mountain and all of the parts we find within a good story.  We learnt about what real authors to do write a story and have even had our first go of having a story edited, publishing a good copy and drawing an illustration.  Feel free to come and see our fine literary words on our WOW wall in our room.  We also had the best day reading our amazing stories to our buddies in 5H.  They were blown away by our vocabulary and exciting problems which we remembered to resolve to make our story interesting for our readers.  More buddy fun is planned for this Friday too!

Wheels after Meals⛸🛹

Wheels After Meals will be held this Tuesday 11th of May (tomorrow). Children are encouraged to bring along their roller blades, skateboards or scooters (no bikes) and the appropriate protective gear. Please be aware that if they do not have their helmet, they will not be able to participate in this wonderful initiative.

Merit Award

Congratulations to the Week 3 Merit Award Winner - Beau We feel very lucky to have you in our class - your determination and focus to try your best is wonderful and we loved reading your great ghost story too! 😁 You are a Year One superstar Beau🌟🤩

Testing

Over the next few weeks we will be under taking some reading and spelling assessment to determine what growth you child has made since the beginning of the term and to inform our teaching practise in the lead up to reports. You may notice that your child moves up in reading levels with their take home books or may continue at the same level to work on their fluency and speed.  Please as always, feel free to email me if you have any questions at all about your child's learning.

Book Fair for 2021 📚📗📕📘📙

The lovely Mrs. Kemp is holding the annual Scholastic Book fair for 2021 in our school Library on Tuesday and Wednesday of Week 5 (18th and 19th of May). We hope to sell a lot of books and posters to raise money for our school and there is less emphasis on small toys that often end up as land fill.

Homework

Homework is due at the end of this week for us to set up the next fortnight of work.  Apologies for last set as the extension reading fluency list was accidentally added to the regular fluency reading list.  Sorry for any confused families with some very tricky words to read!

Please note that next weeks set will look similar with two smaller fluency lists to read over the fortnight that align with our word study during our daily InitiaLit lessons.  Next week's homework set there will be two fluency grids again (one will focus on the ow, oa words and the other on igh, y words).  Feel free to work on both each night or alternate on busy nights.  Both of these reading fluency lists will always correlate with the spelling list (which contains four focus spelling graphemes and four tricky words).

Just a reminder that Reading Comprehension packs are due back to the library every Tuesday and new sets will be given out on Wednesdays.  Please feel free to return the books anybday in the homework folder box any morning and I will ensure they are added to the Comprehension trolley for Mrs Kemp on Tuesday mornings.

I think that's it for now - phew!
Thank you for your continued assistance and support.
