Week 8/9 Term 3 2021

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful week so far with lots of learning and fun.  Today we will finish the week with the OLC's Got Talent Show on after an early lunch break.  The children all looked so wonderful yesterday thank you for sending them to school reading and looking very f i n e ! We have had a great time this week so far, having two Year 5 Challenge Academy students coming to teach us about bees, making some bee craft, learning to draw still-life pictures with Mrs Sorgiovanni, reversible and irreversible changes in science and learning about the three persons of God as our Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

In Initialit reading we have been learning about reading with fluency, verbs and using the suffix 'ed' to show it has already happened.  In reading groups we have been working on sounding out loud tricky words, chunking longer words into syllables and asking someone if we don't know what a word means and can't imagine anything.  We know how important it is to always use our two reading brains - one says the words and sentences and the other imagines what is happening and plays a movie or TV show in our head.  It is important that both happen for us to be 'real readers'.  We are beginning a new writing genre unit, learning about procedural texts - instructions, recipes and how-to are all examples of procedure text which will continue into next term.  In Mathematics, we have been working on our addition number skills and learning about Australian money.  We have learnt how to order coins and notes in value, skip count repeated coin collections and even make our our mixed collections of coins in different ways to a given amount.

Operation Christmas Child

Your child should have brought home a letter today about this special OLC project and they watched some of the videos about it and what happens today in class.  Please see what group your child is in to know what part of the shoebox gift we hope they can bring in.  This initiative has the goal of packing shoeboxes full of little surprises to give to a children who may have never received a gift before. By participating in this our children will have a first hand experience aimed at building the school value of compassion.

Your child will be grouped with three other children to contribute and pack the shoe box. The cost to send a shoe box will be $2.50 per child.  We are asking you to encourage your child to do something extra at home to earn the money that is needed to buy the item to put into the provided shoe box.

Please see below an example of the provided shoe box for Operation Christmas child:

We are asking for all donations to be brought to school by Tuesday 22nd September (Week 10) please. It is very exciting for the children to share in this initiative which has been a part of the O.L.C. Community for the last 17 years.

There is no need to bring in shoe boxes, as we have been kindly donated them from The Samaritans Purse.

Assembly video

Many thanks to Mrs MacFarlane who offered to film the grand performance.  Unfortunately it seems I got a little excited myself and my hands decided to make an appearance while I was leading them.  However, all of these little faces singing their hearts out is just the best!!!!

St Vinnies Fundraiser
On Friday the 24th September (the last day of school) we will have a footy/sport colours day. Students are to bring a gold coin donation with all funds going to our pastoral care fridge and St Vinnies. We thank you in advance for your support with this.

Book Week
Our Book Week celebration will be held in the final week of term with the dress-up assembly being held first part of the day. There is a slight chance the costumes may not be at their finest at our normal assembly time!

Seesaw App and Learning Portfolios

Keep an eye out and don't forget to tick yes to notifications for new additions to your child's learning portfolio.  We will have a few more posts out over the next fortnight.  This is a great way to keep you informed of some of our tasks, work samples and assessments we are completing across the different learning areas rather than only at the end of year formal reports.  Please feel free to contact me if you would like to meet to discuss your child's progress or email me if have any questions or queries at all.  I am so proud of the progress all the students are making and the personal development and desire they have shown to achieve personal learning goals.

Long Service Leave

I will be taking ten days leave at the end of this term for the last few days of Week 9, Week 10 and the first week next term for some family time (and hopefully a little thawing out up north) but rest assured the there will be no impact to your child or their learning during this time as they are in the safe hands and finest education from Mrs Sorgiovanni.
