Week 2 Term 4 2021
Dear Parents,
After some lovely extra time off with family time up north, I was straight back into it last week and can't thank Mrs Sorgiovanni enough for her teaching over the last couple of weeks. The students have grown so much over only a month and I am so proud of such confident, responsible and kind students we have in 1C. Knowing we have such amazing students and teachers at OLC makes working here a blessing and not too rough to get back into things after a month of sunshine and exploring all over our state. Well here we go into Week Three of the last term of Year 1! We weclome Arlo S. this week too to join our 1K team so please make him and his parents feel welcome.
Some big news too is that on Friday our class offered last minute to lead the Grandparents Day assembly as our prayer assembly. We only have the week to prepare and rehearse but as we all know, 1K have amazing performance skills and we are sure to succeed and impress when we lead the assembly this Friday at 2.15! Your child will bring home tomorrow a few lines to practise reading over the week as a little extra homework. No costumes or dress up requirements needed this time and I will also try to record it too and put it on the blog for any parents or grandparents that are away and would like to watch. Please email or ask if you have any questions at all.
This week we are continuing our reading and writing study on traditional tales and fairy tales and had a go at our first 'cold task' writing. We will share these later this week on Seesaw for you to see your child's writing strengths and identify a few areas of need they will work on in their writing groups over this term. Our reading will also continue to work on different areas according to need in our daily reading groups including decoding our final English grapheme letters and phoneme sounds, visualising texts as we read words (playing a movie in our head), comprehending and understanding what we read and retelling what we read in our own words (introduction to summarising).
In Maths we are continuing to build our number operation skills by consolidating our addition and subtraction solving strategies. This includes ways to make 10 and 20, doubles facts, doubles plus one or take one facts, ten more and ten less. These number strategies will help us to solve number sentences with greater accuracy and fluency. We are also learning more addition and subtraction vocabulary to help us solve worded number problems and will continue to solve number problems throughout next fortnight.
In Science our topic for this term is Earth and Space science and in Year 1 we learn about the sky and changes to our landscapes and world during the day and night.
This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Love. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?
9th November – Whole school wellbeing day
11th November – Remembrance Day
12th November – Student Free Day
24th November – OLC AGM meeting
7th December – Whole school Christmas Concert (LOCK THIS ONE IN!)
Thanks for the update Yara is coming back to school tmrw!
