Week 8 Term 1 2022

Kaya Parents,

The students have adapted well to COVID situations and are showing some strong independent skills in the mornings and in the afternoons. We love seeing the children taking responsibility for their belongings and taking on classroom routines with confidence. Both classes are now well into the 'groove' of Year One and we are so proud of the transition that the children have made this term.

We also thank parents for the support we have received thus far. We aim to continue to show you as much of the classroom structure and environment as we can through the Seesaw app and the classroom blog.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Due to the current climate, our face-to-face interviews that normally take place at the end of term one will happen a little differently this year. As parents have not been able to enter the classroom, we have tried to share as much of our learning as possible via Seesaw, which we hope has given you an insight into your child’s progress in Year One.

Prior to the end of term, we are offering parents an opportunity to discuss your child’s current progress. You may receive a meeting request via email from us over the next fortnight. If you do not receive a meeting request by email and would like one, please feel free to email us and we can arrange a phone call or a video conference with you.  penny.king@cewa.edu.au

COVID

Parents and caregivers can now inform the school of their child’s positive or negative COVID result via the link below. The information will go directly to the Health Department, CEWA and the Principal, prompting our COVID response to the community.

Seesaw Announcements and Seesaw Journal Posts

Please remember to go into your settings in the Seesaw app on your phone and turn notifications on to keep informed of happenings in Year 1. We will be using this as a regular means for communication with both Year One classes. We also encourage you to go through your child's Seesaw journal and have a look at the formal learning posts and other everyday learning snapshots. Our formal insight into their personal growth throughout the year and learning samples include a cover sheet with details and a judgement of your child's achievement learning samples include a cover sheet with details and a judgement of your child's achievement in regard to the WA Curriculum and teacher feedback in the form of a rubric or comment for English and Mathematics. This is a great way to keep you informed of your child's progress and receive an insight into their personal growth throughout the year. In addition to Seesaw, the children will receive an end of semester report with grades. We and your child also love to see your name when you have opened up the post and welcome your comments!

Religion

As we are now in the second week of Lent, we are reminded that whatever dangers or difficulties we are faced with, God is always there to support us. We are looking at how Jesus teachers people to love others and how to treat others.

This week we also pray for the Year Four First Eucharist candidates as they receive this special sacrament in the Church.

OLC Character Strength of the Week

Friendology Update

Did you know that Mrs Wendelin has been opening her classroom on Thursdays at lunch for Friendology lunch club? The children can bring their lunchboxes and join in the fun and games with new friends and old and generally have loads of fun together!

In Year One we have been reviewing the four Friendship Facts:

These are helpful facts for a discussion around healthy friendships and for resolving friendship complications - nobody is perfect and neither are our friendships and relationships. We are looking for ways to strengthen our friendships in Year One and also learning ways to be a ‘friendship magnet’ (somebody that has great qualities that others love to be around)!

Silly Sock Fundraiser for World Down Syndrome Day

The theme of World Syndrome Day is ‘What Does Inclusion Mean?’. We are wearing our socks on Monday to share the message of full inclusion in society for people with Down Syndrome and everyone. A pair of socks came home with your child on Friday, painted and ready for Monday. The children are welcome to add anything they like to these socks to make them even more ‘silly’ - ribbons, stickers, drawings, beads or any other crafty items you can find around the house could be added to the socks if the children wish. Please bring a gold coin on the day for the fundraiser.  Also note - There was three lonely pairs left on the bench in our class today so if your child's are missing these may be it!

Learning Intentions

Maths: Skip counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and investigating length.

English: Learning the elements of a narrative to prepare us for our unit on story writing.

Homework

As the students had a very short week in week 6, we are continuing with the same spelling words and fluency grids for another week to consolidate their learning. The students will receive one more new set of words at the beginning of week 9, which will last until the end of term. New readers will still be exchanged on Mondays and Wednesdays. Please write the title of your child's reading book in their reading log so we do not provide your child with the same book. We have no other way of knowing if your child has read that book before. Congratulations to the students for nearly having all homework folders at school on Friday so they could be swapped ready to tackle a new week!
