Week 4 Term 2 2022
Kaya (hello),
Well, here we are heading into week 4 of Term 2 with exciting things to learn.
Casuals for Catholics
Students raised $430.00 last week to be distributed locally.
Wandandi Totems
We start looking at our Noongar flora and fauna totems this term. Our writing text genre is information reports where we will be looking at the facts of the Banksia/Polaga and the Willy-wagtail/Djidi-Djidi and have integrated this into our visual art as well.
Class | Flora | Noongar Name | Fauna | Noongar Name |
1K | Banksia | Polaga | Willy-wagtail | Djidi-Djidi |
Covid News
· Please register any positive cases on the school Self-Reporting Portal on the school website.
· Contact school if you require RATS for close contacts at home.
· If you have a positive case at home, you can send your children to school if they are asymptomatic.
· If your child is unwell, please keep them at home.
Homework
We encourage that homework folders are brought in every day to use the reading books, store notes and other items to go home. Please ensure you send them in with sign and comments it makes it difficult to swap books if we do not know if has been read or if it is not brought in on the correct day.
Each student’s focus spelling words and spelling lists are on the back of the fluency grids. We recommend you write each word out to practice each sound that makes the word. We also recommend your child to read their fluency grid out loud to you each night or morning to continue to develop their reading skills. Remind them - no guessing, sound out word out loud or just look at the tricky parts the first few times to train our reading brain the right way. No guessing as it doesn't build our reading muscles.
New grids are sent home each fortnight (a new one next Monday coming) and we ask that you remove the grids from the reading file and keep them in a prominent place in your home to encourage your child to read and record their times each night. There is no need to keep them in the folders or return the fluency grids back to school. To answer a couple of parent questions - yellow reading grids are considered average/expected Year 1 reading level words, pink and cream are support words and blue are extension words that contain suffixes/ prefixes and multiple syllable words.
Friendology
In Friendology, we have been discussing how friendships are not always smooth sailing. Sometimes we have disagreements or feel left out by others and we are learning the language around resolving what we call Friendship Fires. The information in the Friend-O-Cycle demonstrates the steps to follow to Put Out the Fire and restore a Healthy Friendship. There are also some tips to Talk-It-Out. These strategies empower the children to resolve their own conflicts and help to increase their self-esteem.
Learning Intentions:
Reading and Spelling: New reading spelling words come out next Monday. Our new sounds will be the grapheme 'y' that makes the long i sound like in cry, my and why. We will also learn our first trigraph which is three letters that make one sound. this is 'igh' which also makes the long i sound such as in night, high and light. Spelling lists are found on the back of the home fluency speed reading grids.
Writing: We can write fact statement sentences that include verbs, nouns and adjectives. Our sentences include a capital letter and full stop. We can organise our fact statement sentences into an information report text.
Reading: We can identify the parts of an information report. We understand that groups of sentences about the same type of information can become a paragraph in an information report.
Mathematics: We can solve addition and subtraction problems by using the part-part-whole method and think about the strategies our brain uses to solve them. We can write the number sentences for addition and subtraction word problems.
Here are some photos of us on Friday starting to discuss and record how our maths brain thinks and solves number problems. We learnt that there are lots of different ways we can solve problems and how useful our friends of ten facts, knowing about turn around facts and doubles facts can help us solve them really quickly.
Footy Challenge
Character Strength
This week’s character strength is judgement.
Canteen
Unfortunately, the canteen will be closed on Tuesday 17th of May. It will be open on Wednesday the 18th of May instead. The menu will still be the same - pizza, fresh sandwiches and wraps. The canteen will be open as usual on 19th of May.
Book Fair
The Annual OLC Book Fair will be held in the hall on Tue 17th – Wed 18th May from 8-8:40am in the mornings and 3-4pm in the afternoons. The hall will also be open for the children at lunchtime on those days. There will be a very simple competition again this year for Kindy – Year 6. Entries will randomly be drawn after lunch Wednesday and will win a book of their choice from the fair. All children can enter, irrespective of whether they buy a book or not. Usually, OLC makes a considerable commission on books sold. This means that we can buy some books from the fair for the library, earn points to buy scholastic books later in the year and take some cash to spend at local bookshops. As bookfair is happening this term there is no Book Club.
Vinnies Winter Appeal
Hi everyone, you have probably heard about the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. This is a program that helps people that are less fortunate than us going into winter to stay warm. We are collecting any warm clothes and blankets that you are not using. There will be a box at the front office you can put your items in by the 23rd of May. Any questions go to Xavier Armstrong in 6H.
