Welcome to Term 2!

...Welcome to Term 2! I hope you all had a lovely holidays relaxing and everyone is feeling refreshed and ready to go. Apart from a few days in Perth, my children and I have had a wonderful two weeks enjoying holiday life at home.  However, school and my amazing class of kids have been missed I am looking forward to a jam-packed 11 week Term 2 with your children. We are very lucky to have two wonderful team members to the 1K class- Avalon and Emily!  I'm looking forward to meeting them tomorrow as are the rest of the kids.

Well done to Liam for our second Star Citizen for our class at our last assembly for Term 1.  Liam consistently shows compassion for others, welcoming others and noticing those in need.  Congratulations Liam!

Homework - Spelling📚
Spelling lists in your child's homework book will look a little bit different this term. It will consist of four focus sounds and four tricky words. These focus sounds and tricky words are linked with InitiaLit and will also be the sounds we will be focusing on in class for each fortnight. Spelling has changed this term because we are now commencing the InitiaLit 1 program and upon reflection of  Initialit test data and Soundwaves spelling test conducted last term. We still encourage you to read the list out to your child and have them sound out the words out loud.  The 'tricky' words will just have a part or a sound that has unusual spelling that your child needs to remember which part hence them nicknamed tricky words.

Homework
Homework will be sent home on Monday which includes the homework grid, fluency reading grid and a spelling list with the focus sounds and tricky words that we are learning. We love it when you can fill in your child's R.E.D reading folder which helps us track how they are going in their reading.  This fortnight, our focus sounds are the double letters ff, ll, ss and zz and the digraph ck.  These spelling graphemes are often used immediately after we hear and see a short vowel sound a, e, i, o, u.     😎
Please ensure that you sign your child's homework grid before the due date so we can monitor your child's progress at home.

Newstelling - We will begin our newstelling first thing next week and the roster will be posted by the end of this week.  Your child will see their name on a a day once a fortnight will be nominated and your child will bring home a newstelling bag the day before to help them prepare and bring to school.  Newstelling is a great opportunity for the students to practise speaking formally for a few minutes to their peers but conducted in an informal and welcoming setting at the end of each day.  We will begin with a free-choice topic of anything at all that they student would like to share and talk about with the class for a a few minutes.  If a bag is forgotten to be bought to school it is okay, your child will be able to do it the following day and be aware that newstelling is optional as we ensure the speaking and listening part of the curriculum is covered each day within our literacy and other area learning.
We do ask that nothing valuable or extremely fragile is bought to school and that other rule is that the object must be able to fit inside the cotton bag.  Students are more than welcome to just speak and please be aware that no object is needed at all and you can can use a photo that can be emailed to me if this is an easy option for you.  Within the newstelling bags you will find a prompt sheet and a texta that you may help your child write some key words if they wish.

Wheelie Walkie Waste Free Wednesday 🚲🛴🚶‍♀️
This wonderful initiative begins this Wednesday and will run for the whole term. There is a class challenge and I would love for our class to be the best in the school and see how many students we can get wheeling or walking. If we are the winners, we get to go for a class excursion anywhere in the Busselton region, a great prize indeed! If you are unable to wheel or walk, please make sure your child is coming with as much nude food (no packaging) as possible.

Important Dates 📅
Monday 26th April - Public holiday

Wed 28th April - Wheelie, Walkie Waste free Wednesday

Thank you for your ongoing support and assistance.
