Week 5 Term 1 2022

Kaya parents,

Here we are -  halfway through Term 2 already!

 Homework

A new list has been sent home including a  fluency grid with this fortnight's focus sounds of 'y' and 'igh' and tricky words. Please look at information in last week's post about the process we ask for reading this grid every night.  We have also included all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid. The yellow list for reading and spelling is the target for Year One from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Have a look at our Fluency grids and spelling lists below to see our focus sounds.

We focus on the ‘i’ sounds for the next two weeks and look at the different ways to spell the ‘i’ sound, such as ‘y’ and ‘igh’.

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are learning the spelling sounds 'igh' as in light and 'y' as in cry.

Last week, we focused on learning the difference between a fact and an opinion. We learnt that a fact is something that can be proven to be true and an opinion is what someone thinks or feels. This week we will be continuing our focus on the text genre of information reports and will begin to look at our information text about our totem animal Djiti djiti /Willie Wagtail.

We have also been learning within the InitaLit program the difference between an imaginative text and an informative text.

St Vincent De Paul

Hi everyone, you have probably heard about the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.  This is a program that helps people that are less fortunate than us going into winter to stay warm. We are collecting any warm clothes and blankets that you are not using. There will be a box at the front office you can put your items by the 23rd of May. Any questions go to Xavier Armstrong in 6H

Important dates

Morning Tea - Friday 27th May (children can bring in a gold coin to purchase a sweet treat)

Student Free Day - Friday 3rd of June

Public Holiday - Monday 6th of June

Homework Folders

Please bring them in each day. New fluency grids came out a little early last week. If you misplace your fluency grid, please let us know, and we will email you one or place it in your child’s homework folder.

Learning Intentions

Writing

We will now focus on the text genre of information reports. The information report will look at the classification, appearance, habitat, diet, behaviour, and interesting facts. We will also be looking at different animals and food and how we can use a range of adjectives to provide more detail to our writing and to engage the reader.

Mathematics

This week, we have begun focusing on time. We will be looking at reading o’clock and half past times both digitally, on an analogue clock.

Character Strength

Leadership – I take part and guide groups to meaningful goals and ensure good relationships.

Enrolment Applications for Kindy 2023

Parents who have children commencing Kindergarten next year, could you please submit your applications ASAP. You can request one from the front office or download one off the school website, under information.

Two Minute Footy Challenge

Our “Two Minute Footy Challenge” will continue on dry lunchtimes when Mr Lee does not have a supervision duty. It is just too hard to choose a date for each class with the current weather. The competition is for boys and girls from Year 1-6 to see how many marks they can take with a partner over a 5-metre distance in two minutes.

Free Dress

If your child is in Leeuwin, they have free dress on Friday the 27th. Children are still to wear appropriate shoes that they can run in.

Bornung Koort Dombart Wongi – Many hearts one voice!
