Week 1 Term 3 2022
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to Week One. I hope you had a lovely holiday and managed to get some sun on a few winter days (or stay inside with all this rain!). I hope you all managed to have some rest and relaxation over the last two weeks. We are getting ready for a massive Term Three ahead and cannot wait to get into all the fun learning that will be happening over the next few weeks!
Dance with Mrs. Haines
This semester, our class will be participating in dance every Monday for the Year 1s. This happy news means that students will now wear sports uniforms on Monday as well as Thursdays and Fridays every week for the rest of the year. . I am so excited to see the movers and groovers in our class for the end of year concert. I will send out a text as well so that students are prepared for the uniform change tomorrow but if they days are ever mixed up please don't worry about it too much as they won't be excluded or miss out.
Assembly
Assemblies are back and we are currently allocated our performance assembly Week 8 next term.
Homework
On Monday we will be sending home the Year One fluency grid with this fortnights focus sounds and tricky words. Have a look at our previous blog posts which shows you how you can use this at home to increase your child's reading fluency. We have also included on the back all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid. The middle (yellow) list 💓 is the target for Year One from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Our focus sound for the next fortnight is the er sound which can be represented by the 'ir' 'ur and 'er' graphemes. We ask that these fluency grids are practised every night and kept in a well seen spot in your home, these do not need to come to school. Homework folders and readers will continue to be welcomed each morning and sent home every afternoon (readers are swapped on Wednesdays and Fridays).
Writing: We look at the structure of a persuasive text.
Mathematics: We investigate multiplication by looking at equal amounts in each group, repeated addition and groups of numbers.
Spelling: ir/er/ur as ‘her, surfing, term, bird, girls, burn’.
Friendology
All families will by now have had an email inviting them to access URSTRONG. URSTRONG’s whole-school friendship strategy has improved the social climate in schools around the world, connecting over a million kids, parents, and teachers with a common language of friendship. We are proud to be a URSTRONG School and are committed to empowering your children with friendship skills.
You are invited to take advantage of a FREE Parent Membership to access hundreds of resources – including an 8 session video series. This will allow you to learn the same language & strategies being taught in the classroom through the Friendology 101 curriculum.
Religion - Prayer
Over the next five weeks, the students will be learning about formal and informal prayer. The Bishops of Western Australia have the responsibility of ensuring that Catholic schools teach the Religious Education Program that they have approved. The purpose of Religious Education is to provide an understanding of the Christian message as it is handed on by the Catholic Church. This Year 1 unit explores the importance of learning. Your child will discover the people and personal gifts that help them to learn. God gave people special gifts that help them to learn so that they can know about God, others and the world. Your child will explore how people learn, for example, through stories and at school. The Bible is a special book that has many stories. Your child will learn that there are different types of stories in each of the two main parts of the Bible. They will listen to ‘The Creation Story’ to find out how God created the world and everything in it for people to enjoy. The Bible is sacred because it is God’s message to people and is to be treated with respect. Your child will be shown how the Bible is treated with respect by being kept in a place of honour.
Science Year 1 - students will investigate observable changes that occur in the sky and on the land. They will describe the Sun’s path in the sky and the appearance of the Moon and stars at night. Students will observe and record seasonal and daily weather changes and identify how they influence their daily lives.
